VESTAVIA HILLS STORM RECOVERY EFFORTS
As we continue our relief efforts in the City, we ask for all of our citizens to please have patience with our progress. Our first efforts were directed at life saving and then to recovery efforts. We are attempting to open the main thoroughfares first. In doing so we are working in conjunction with Alabama Power. Many trees are on or entangled with power lines. We cannot remove these trees until the power lines are determined to pose no threat to our personnel or citizens. We will start clearing the side streets as soon as possible. We are working as hard as humanly possible to assist all of our citizens. Thank you.

Additional Trucks and Outside Assistance to Clear Debris by End of April
A message from Mayor Zaragoza
Numerous calls have been received in my office in the last couple of weeks concerning problems with debris pick-up. This message is to let you know I am aware of the delay in pick-up and to let you know what measures are being taken to get the City cleaned up.
To address the immediate need to clear the debris, additional trucks are being brought in, and outside help is being brought in to assist the efforts of the City and Advanced Disposal.
To improve the response time for debris pick-up through the year, a new strategy is being implemented. The City will be divided into four sections, each with a boom truck assigned to pick-up for that area.
We will make our best efforts to have the storm debris and late pick-ups cleared away by the end of the month, if the spring weather will cooperate. Your patience during this time is greatly appreciated. We are hoping through these measures to improve trash service for our residents and to keep our City looking beautiful.

|
In November the Alabama Power Foundation and the Alabama Urban Forestry Association selected Vestavia Hills to receive funds to construct a gateway to the City. The City applied in September for funds to construct a gateway sign to the U.S. 280 entrance to Cahaba Heights. This location was chosen because of its importance in differentiating the City from Birmingham and Mountain Brook. |

Leaf Collection Changes and Guidelines
Effective Immediately
With this year's fall season, change is in the air. Please know that effective immediately, all leaves prepared for collection must be bagged or containerized rather than raked to the streets.
This change is being implemented for many reasons:
- Accumulated loose leaves clog the storm water drain system and cause flooding and dangerous driving conditions.
- Blowing piles of leaves creates havoc and discontent on neighbors and their yards and public rights-of-way.
- Weekly collection of bagged/containerized leaves vs. once every five weeks for vacuum service (Nov–Mar only) is more convenient and will allow for more aesthetically pleasing, safe neighborhoods throughout the year.
- Vacuum leaf service is costly and less efficient while curbside bagged/containerized leaf service allows the City to maintain leaf collection at an economical cost with no fee increase to residents.
- Guidelines:
- Place bagged or containerized leaves within four feet of the curb on your scheduled collection day (same as your garbage collection day).
- No single bag or container should exceed 50 lbs.
- There is no limit to the number of bags or containers you may place curbside for collection.
- All bags and containers should be placed curbside by 6:30 am on your collection day.
Thank you for your cooperation and transition to this new leaf collection system. Please know that this change has been made in the overall best financial, aesthetic and safety interests of our residents.
