Successful Aging Initiative

Vestavia Hills Parks and Recreation department was host to a Successful Aging Initiative seminar “Invest in Aging” June 18, 2009. The seminar itself was a success, and there are possibilities for similar seminars in the future. We were privileged to have Dr. Richard Powers as keynote speaker for the event. Vestavia Hills in partnership with All Caring Home Care and the Birmingham Water Works Drink Water Campaign held the Successful Aging Initiative seminar, which was sponsored by the Alabama Cooperative Extension System, the Alabama Bureau of Geriatric Psychiatry, AARP Alabama and several local sponsors and exhibitors.

Fireman's 5K Run
This fund-raising event is sponsored by the Vestavia Hills Fire Department on behalf of the Muscular Dystrophy Association. Race location for this year will be in LIBERTY PARK. We are planning our annual 5K road race for May 30, 2009, at 8:00 a.m. The race will start and end at the Liberty Park Elementary School. We will have awards for the runners, as well as door prize drawings. This is a great run for a very worthwhile cause, and we look forward to your participation. Firefighters throughout the United States engage in fund-raising efforts on behalf of the MDA. The annual Jerry Lewis Telethon is MDA's best-known means of raising funds and educating the community about Neuromuscular Disorders. Our local chapter of the MDA provides clinics for patients, funds research investigations, organizes support groups, sends patients to summer camps, and assists with special needs such as wheelchairs and braces. MDA programs in the Birmingham area are made possible through support of dedicated volunteers, generous sponsors, and contributors.

Police Officers Bike for MS
Several of Vestavia Hills' police officers are planning to participate in a bike ride to raise money for research for a cure for multiple sclerosis. “We’ve formed a team for the MS Bike Tour because we know riding 150 miles is nowhere near as hard as difficult as confronting a life with Multiple Sclerosis,” officers state on their team website, www.vhpdbiketeam.org. The ride will take place September 26-27 in Mooresville, Alabama. Click the photo of team captain Cpl. Greg Taylor for more information.
