Information
about City of Vestavia Hills Committees
|
|
| Created
in December 2000, the purpose of this committee is to provide recommendations
to the City Council on requests for annexation of properties into
the City of Vestavia Hills. The committee helps to provide a consistent
process for the evaluation of annexation requests and uses a process
that involves all stakeholders (Board of Education, Police, Fire,
Engineering and Public Safety) to bring about improved accountability
to the public for the quality of decisions made. The committee meets
on a quarterly basis and reviews each annexation petition for minimum
tax assessed values, school system impact, fire and police protection
issues and engineering and public safety issues and then passes
an affirmative or negative recommendation to the City Council for
a final decision. |

The
purpose of this committee is to assist in meeting the needs of
those people who serve as caregivers and volunteers in our community
and others who need assistance from their neighbors through recommendations
and referrals to currently available Care Teams. Many people who
are older need assistance and rather than have one individual
attempt to provide assistance to that individual, it has been
demonstrated that it is better to have a group of people (5 or
6) who have been well trained to assist in helping their neighbors
deal with adversities.
By encouraging care teams, we feel we can be of great assistance
to these individuals within our community who need care and help.
The
committee also publishes articles that recognize, celebrate and
encourage any caring volunteer activity through the Vestavia Hills
Community Newsletter.
The committee meets once a month (one hour) to bring ideas and
brainstorm about future VH Newsletter articles and activities
that can be done to promote caring activity through volunteerism.
Articles are written by committee individuals and edited within
the committee, prior to submission for publication.
Multigenerational caring activities continue to be the highest
priority. Referral(s) and advise to inquiring individuals who
may need assistance or those who may want to volunteer, by giving
resources and opportunities.
The
committee is open to fresh ideas for article topics that suggest
more ways to foster this caring activity. Any interested citizen
may join our band of volunteer Care team Leadership Committee.

| This
committee was appointed in an attempt to encourage people with different
cultural backgrounds to become more involved in the activities of
the city. This committee includes some individuals who were born
in other countries and then immigrated to the United States and
settled in Vestavia Hills. We are pleased that the Diversity Committee
planned an International Food Festival this past spring which was
extremely successful. Foods from ten nations were featured and it
is hoped to expand this event next year to include not only the
presentation of foods of other countries but the sharing of various
aspects of the culture of these countries. |

This
committee was formed in early 2007 to promote efforts to keep
litter out of Vestavia Hills, primarily by organizing Saturday
cleanup details performed by teams of ten to twelve persons working
in areas that need trash and clutter removal.

Planning,
Zoning and Redevelopment Advisory Committee
|
| This
committee was appointed to serve as an advisory committee to the
Planning and Zoning Commission and the Board of Zoning Adjustment.
There are approximately 2900 different properties in the Cahaba
Heights area that will have to be rezoned from county zoning to
compatible Vestavia Hills zoning. This is an immense task and we
feel the people on this committee can be very helpful in advising
and making suggestions to the Planning and Zoning Commission and
the Board of Zoning Adjustment. Additionally, there are developers
who are interested in putting more commercial development in the
area of Cahaba Heights. It is felt that this committee can be very
helpful in advising the administration, Council, Planning and Zoning
Commission and the Board of Zoning Adjustment on what action might
be taken as it relates to the development or redevelopment of property
in the Cahaba Heights area. This permits neighborhood input from
the citizens in the Cahaba Heights area on the issue of zoning,
development, etc. |

Senior
Citizens Services Committee
|
| This
committee was appointed to provide an exchange of ideas between
the seniors who live in the Cahaba Heights area and their activities
at the New Merkel House and the programs that have been developed
by the senior citizens group meeting at the Lodge at Wald Park.
By exchanging information between the two programs, we feel there
can be a strengthening of the programs held at the Lodge as well
as those at the New Merkel House. |

Sidewalks,
Neighborhood Parks, Trails & Bike Paths Committee
|
| This
committee was appointed to seek citizen input as it relates to the
development of a comprehensive plan for sidewalks, neighborhood
parks, trails and bike paths in Vestavia Hills. Prior to the establishment
of this committee there was not a master plan for sidewalks, neighborhood
parks, trails and bike paths in Vestavia Hills and the committee
has done an excellent job in helping to develop such a plan for
the city. This plan will now have to be updated to include the Cahaba
Heights area of Vestavia Hills. As the plan is refined and expanded,
it will be taken to the City Council for their review and hopefully,
their approval. |
