AARP Driver's Safety Program
June 8 and 9, 2009 9am-1pm. Classes will be held at the Vestavia Hills Civic Center (1173 Merryvale Road Vestavia Hills, AL 35216). Space is limited. $12 AARP members, $14 nonmembers. Please contact Ken Lundberg 822-8862 to sign up and for more information.
About the course:
-It's an 8-hour classroom refresher course for drivers age 50 and older.
-Minimal fee, and no tests!

Activities
For over twenty-five years Vestavia Hills Parks and Recreation has enjoyed very active, exciting Senior Programming. “Spirited” Seniors have participated in continuing Ballroom Dance Programs, Bridge, Bingo, Travel to all points of the Globe and extra special, “Special Events”. The Parks and Recreation Department also organizes a variety of courses and programs for all age groups. View the current course schedule.
An excellent opportunity to meet and enjoy the company of other Senior Citizens in Vestavia Hills is to join the Vestavia Hills Senior Citizens Association.

Garbage Collection
The City of Vestavia Hills provides Curbside Garbage and Trash collection twice per week. Residents are provided with wheeled garbage cans that must be rolled out to the street curb for collection.

If you are physically unable to manage the garbage cans, the City will provide you with "backdoor service" free of charge. To qualify, you must meet the following requirements:
- Secure a written statement from your physician that you are unable to manage the garbage cans yourself.
- This physician's statement must be forwarded to the Public Works Department:

"Backdoor Service" is also available to any resident willing to pay a service fee of $20.00 per month.
If you have an exceptionally steep driveway you may also qualify for "backdoor service" at no charge. Before the City can grant such requests, a city official will have to inspect your driveway and approve your application for "backdoor service". Safety and Security
The City of Vestavia Hills is a very safe city in which to live and to visit. The City Police Department provides several programs designed to enhance the safety and security of all citizens:
Medical Alerts: This program is designed to assist the Police and Fire Departments in meeting the needs of citizens that have special medical problems. If you or someone at your address has special medical needs, please follow the instructions on the Medical Alert Form, fill in the pertinent information, and submit the completed form to the Vestavia Hills Police Department. If the Police or Fire Department is dispatch to your address, they will have the information you supplied on the Medical Alert Form.
Patrol Request: If you would like the police department to increase patrols in your area for a specific purpose, (such as speeders, running stop signs, blocking the street, etc.) call the Communication Dispatch at 823-1153 and ask for a increased patrols in your area.
Vacation Patrol Request: If you are going on vacation or away from your home for an extended period, the Vestavia Hills Police Department will increase patrols at your residence. To request this service, you need to fill out a form and turn that form in to the Communication Dispatcher prior to your departure. Go to the Police Department in the Vestavia Hills Municipal Complex. If you need directions, see the Police Dept. Location / Map page. You may pick up the form at the same location (phone number 823-1153), or you may print or download the form directly from this web site.
Nosey Neighbor Program: This is a Crime Prevention and Block Watch Program designed for neighbors to watch out for each other. If your neighborhood would like to start a Nosey Neighbor Program, please call Police Records at 978-0124. The Vestavia Hills Police Department will assist you in organizing the program and discuss home security and personal safety information with the program's participants.
Unlock Vehicle: If you happen to lock your keys in your car at home or while shopping in Vestavia Hills, call Communication Dispatch as 823-1153. An officer will be dispatched to your location to assist you. If you want the officer to attempt to unlock your vehicle you must complete a release form. If the officer cannot unlock your vehicle he/she will assist you by calling a locksmith.
