A
pandemic is not the only potential peril

Many
people are talking about the Bird Flu Pandemic. Pandemic preparedness
is becoming the word of the day. And there is every reason to
believe this scenario is plausible, but this Pandemic is only
one of many issues that should be on our radar. Our citizens,
particularly seniors, individuals with disabilities, those with
compromised health, and the very young, are most at risk if,
indeed, a calamity strikes. Straight-line winds, hurricanes,
inland floods and tornadoes can be added to the list of possibilities
- they all happen.
Does
our current culture and tradition lend the cognitive muscle
to manage the next large crisis? Most experts think not yet.
What can be done to prepare for such possibilities? Where can
we go to learn how to protect our family and friends from future
preventable harm?
Vestavia
Hills Mayor, Scotty McCallum, Vestavia Hills Fire Department
and Leadership Vestavia Hills have developed a novel approach.
The program is called Vestavia Hills Community Emergency Response
Team (CERT) Program. In the spirit of collaboration, this group
has come up with an all-hazards approach to emergency
preparedness planning. This new and improved CERT training has
a more comprehensive perspective, building the skills to allow
a deeper level of preparedness. This may improve the process,
reducing injury and protecting lives.
There
are more than 170 CERT programs nationwide. Now the Vestavia
Hills Fire Department Trainers are ready to begin the initial
CERT class on September 12, 2006. Using the lessons learned
in the classroom and during exercises, volunteer CERT members
can help others after an event when professional responders
may not be available.
Join
thousands of volunteers that have gone through similar training
all across the nation. The program is open to adults, at no
cost, however space is limited. For more information call 978-0218
or visit http://www.citizencorps.gov/cert/.
